I’ve been a musician since I was 10 years old and have recorded a ton of songs, but I’ve never shot a music video, despite playing in a band with a film director for almost five years.
Anyway, I still haven’t done a properly-planned music video, but sometimes things happen spur-of-the-moment that work out better than the planned ones.
I was in Borrego Springs again this year for the Christmas holiday and my friend Jorah stopped by for lunch, after which he told me about a new camera he’d gotten for Christmas and asked if he could film me playing his guitar to try it out. I didn’t know what to sing, so he suggested “Honeypot.” I kept cracking up laughing so was only able to make it through the song twice, not really thinking much about what we’d end up with or what to do with it.
A few days later, Jorah emailed me asking if I’d be ok with the footage being synced up to the recorded version of the song. I sent him a bunch of headlines about political sex scandals to use.
